Inspiring leaders and managers to embrace the value-based healthcare shift

The UNIVANTS of Healthcare Excellence Programme is a prestigious global award created by Abbott in partnership with leading healthcare organisations across the world with a common vision to inspire and celebrate healthcare excellence. Every year this award recognises teams who collaborate across disciplines and transform healthcare delivery, and ultimately patient lives.

EHMA is proud to be one of the UNIVANTS founding partners and to have actively collaborated with this program to foster scalability, replication and understanding of practices with proven effectiveness in transforming and consolidating delivery according to value-based healthcare principles.

Many of the problems in today’s healthcare can be addressed through value-based healthcare. To date value-based healthcare implementation has been primarily discussed in technical term of measurements, organisational structure and competition. However, a true shift from volume to value requires a change in culture and a different way of working of healthcare professionals. Organisations that have succeeded in measuring outcomes are not widely disseminated in ways that improve service delivery and ensure evolution to become value-based care providers.

We are therefore delighted to announce the publication of two white papers which gather the best practices submitted and awarded by the UNIVANTS program in 2020 and 2021, providing insights, best practice and actionable guidance to implement the value-based healthcare shift.

We are also pleased to announce that the UNIVANTS of Healthcare Excellence Award is accepting submissions for its 2022 edition. Multidisciplinary healthcare teams are welcome to submit their applications detailing how they have advanced care in clinical practice. The submission of applications is open until 15 November 2022.

I have been active in EHMA since the first years of the '90s and I have seen its evolution from a small association of members interested in sharing knowledge on health management practices to the current status of reference and advisory key player for EU, health systems and organisations, stakeholders associations, industry and universities. Health management has a crucial function in shaping public health and health system challenges. The Medical University of Varna, Bulgaria had success in collaborating with EHMA on EU-funded projects that has resourced us to create new health management competencies for the future workforce.
