The series ‘Health Management in action: fostering health systems’ resilience’ included ten episodes that presented best practices, case studies, practical examples and implementable solutions to improve health systems preparedness and rapid response to health threats.
Episode 5 – Health service delivery before and after the pandemic
How has the COVID-19 pandemic influenced the way healthcare services are being delivered? What are the new ways in which health service providers collaborate with other disciplines and how could we make these collaborations sustainable? The speakers compared absorptiveness, adaptiveness, and transformativeness in health service provision before and after COVID-19.

Prof Axel Kaehne
Prof Axel Kaehne joined Edge Hill as a Senior Research Fellow in April 2013. He was appointed Reader in Health Service Research in 2016 and is currently Professor of Health Services Research and Director of the Evaluation and Policy Analysis Unit (EPA). He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Integrated Care.
Prof Axel Kaehne has designed and delivered evaluations of health improvement programmes in England and Wales and is also a member of the Children’s Nursing Research Unit at Alder Hey, the Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
He works with colleagues across England to establish an Integrated Care Researcher Network. He is teaching Research Methodologies, Quantitative Approaches and Statistics/SPSS on the MCh and MRes course in the faculty and supervises currently three PhD students and several Master’s students. He is leading a module in Strategic Clinical Leadership and the dissertation module for the MCh (taught) degree.

Mr Stecy Yghemonos is Director at EUROCARERS. He has extensive experience of business development, and project design and management, and has worked in the social and health fields for more than 13 years. He has played a leading role in international ventures aiming to promote and defend important rights such as universal and equitable access to health, the achievement of MDGs, press freedom, children’s rights and participative democracy.
In his previous job he was Manager for a not-for-profit organisation which fostered learning between countries in what works to improve health and tackle health inequalities, particularly through action on the social determinants of health. He built up the portfolio of work, including in the framework of the EU Employment and Social Investment (EaSI) programme, to develop and lead several initiatives which brought together partners and stakeholders to improve health. He has worked with several parts of the EU institutions, World Health Organization and Civil Society.

Health management has a crucial function in shaping public health and health system challenges. The Medical University of Varna, Bulgaria had success in collaborating with EHMA on EU-funded projects that has resourced us to create new health management competencies for the future workforce. In addition to all classical definitions, health management is a science dealing with individuals, groups, and society at large. It is an art contributing to the beauty of our lives and an interactive communication process at all levels of institutions and human energy.
