Enhancing Health Management competences Across Diverse Care Settings

One of EHMA’s primary goals is to strengthen health management capacity by providing valuable resources to health managers and the broader healthcare workforce. In November 2024, an initiative was launched to advance this effort. This initiative aimed to empower healthcare professionals with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to make a meaningful impact within the health system.
In support of this mission, SDA Bocconi School of Management has developed five self-paced learning modules for EHMA, designed to enhance health management literacy across diverse care settings, including community services, primary, secondary, tertiary, and long-term care.
The programme registrations were available as open access to EHMA members and its network, benefiting almost 200 participants. Though registrations have now concluded, participants still have the opportunity to complete their programme, which will remain active until mid-2025. Below, you can find further details on the module content and other relevant details.
EHMA takes great pride in the success of this initiative and remains committed to supporting health managers and professionals by providing accessible, high-quality learning opportunities that strengthen health management capacity across diverse care settings.
Concept of the E-Learning course
This training course consists of five modules designed to enhance health management capacity across diverse care settings (e.g. primary care, community care, secondary care, etc.) by integrating digital health, innovative approaches, and holistic strategies. Each module focuses on a key topic and challenge from a healthcare management perspective and provides an overview of key challenges, theoretical concepts and practical knowledge to empower healthcare professionals to drive change, improve outcomes, and foster resilience in healthcare systems.
This course is designed for healthcare professionals and leaders across all care settings who are involved in or aspire to play a role in health management and system transformation.

Module 1: Leveraging Digitalisation and Artificial intelligence (AI) in Healthcare
Module 1: Leveraging Digitalisation and Artificial intelligence (AI) in Healthcare
Digital health, powered by a range of technologies such as computing platforms, connectivity, software, and sensors, has become a critical driver in transforming healthcare delivery. Its applications range from apps that help patients manage their own health to AI algorithms that assist healthcare professionals with diagnosis and treatment. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the shortcomings of traditional healthcare methods, pushing many regions to adopt digital health technologies (DHTs) and virtual care. However, true digital transformation goes beyond mere technological digitisation—it involves integrating these tools into organisational, managerial, and professional practices to enhance performance and improve health outcomes. Achieving this requires policy changes, new management practices, and skill development among healthcare
workers. This module will focus on equipping health professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to harness, effectively implement, and evaluate DHTs.
Key Learning Outcomes:
• Gain an understanding of digital healthcare transformation, including current trends and frameworks.
• Learn how to use AI, big data, and digital tools to enhance patient care and healthcare

Module 2: Implementing a One Health Approach
Module 2: Implementing a One Health Approach
The One Health approach recognises that human, animal, and environmental health are interconnected. It aims to design and implement programs, policies, legislation, and research in which multiple sectors communicate and work together to achieve better public health outcomes. The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the need for a unified approach to address health threats arising from the imbalance between human activities and increased stress on our ecosystems. The One Health approach can help to sustainably balance and optimise the health of humans, animals, plants, and the environment. Despite the experience of multiple health challenges, disease outbreaks, and epidemics, investment in the One Health approach is limited, fragmented, and unsustainable. To prevent, prepare for and respond to emerging health challenges, all relevant sectors must collaborate in an integrated manner that breaks down the silos between sectors and disciplines. Greater collaborative dialogue and joint actions are required between human, animal, plant, and environmental health organisations, as well as the financial sector, in order to secure the long-term investment needed. This module aims to empower healthcare professionals to understand the concept of One Health at different levels and to collaborate across disciplines in developing solutions that address the intersection of these areas. It will strengthen the knowledge and competencies needed to understand One Health, and the interventions necessary to address its challenges, which require multidisciplinary approaches. It will also showcase examples of recent One Health initiatives.
Key Learning Outcomes:
- Grasp the principles and significance of the One Health approach.
- Develop skills to collaborate across sectors (human, animal, environmental) for better health outcomes.
- Design and implement interventions that support One Health principles within their healthcare environment.
- Develop knowledge and competencies for preventing, predicting, detecting and responding to global health threats such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Module 3: Developing Value-Based Health Services
Module 3: Developing Value-Based Health Services
Value-based healthcare aims to deliver better health outcomes for patients while optimising resource use. However, the current system for structuring, reimbursing, and measuring health care delivery often remain misaligned with this goal. Therefore, achieving significant improvements in value will require major strategic and organisational changes in how healthcare is delivered, measured, and financed. The module is designed to inspire new thinking with the ultimate goal of motivating and informing changes in actual practice and to guide participants in transitioning from volume-based care (focused on the quantity of services) to value-based care (focused on the quality of outcomes). It will focus on aligning healthcare services with patient[1]centered goals while enhancing overall system efficiency and sustainability. Participants will explore the fundamentals of value, quality and cost measures, value-based care delivery, payment models, and decision-making models.
Key Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the framework and benefits of value-based healthcare.
- Learn how to measure and track patient outcomes to inform service improvements.
- Develop strategies to create value-driven care models that improve patient satisfaction and health outcomes.

Module 4: Fostering Innovation Procurement in Healthcare
Module 4: Fostering Innovation Procurement in Healthcare
Innovation procurement involves acquiring new, innovative goods, services, or solutions that are often not yet widely available in the market. This approach requires a more flexible and strategic focus on outcomes rather than just cost, and considering the long-term benefits of innovation. It is essential for ensuring that healthcare systems adopt cutting edge solutions to enhance service delivery and patient care. This module will equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge to navigate frontier health policies to manage innovation and understand the key types of innovation procurement. It will cover the importance of innovative procurement practices, from acquiring medical technologies to implementing digital health tools, and provide guidance on identifying, implementing, and evaluating new solutions that meet the evolving needs of healthcare systems.
Key Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the processes of innovation procurement and its significance in healthcare.
- Learn how to source, evaluate, and implement innovative healthcare solutions.
- Develop a framework for integrating innovation procurement into strategic planning for healthcare services.

Module 5: Enhancing professional dynamics and workforce resilience in healthcare
Module 5: Enhancing professional dynamics and workforce resilience in healthcare
Healthcare organisations are among the most complex, given their professional nature, reliance on advanced technology, significant social impact, and close ties with the political system. The Covid 19 pandemic has placed immense pressure on the healthcare workforce, exposing the limitation of siloed work, professionalism, and lack of professional integration. Coupled with issues such as skill mix imbalances, workforce shortages, and aging staff, these challenges have greatly affected both professional wellbeing and the quality of care provided. This module will address professional dynamics, leadership, and personnel management, offering strategies for managers to address or mitigate staff distribution imbalances and the professional factors influencing workplace choice.
Key Learning Outcomes:
- Understand professionalism in healthcare and its implication
- Learn strategies to enhance people management and support personnel growth
- Develop policies and programs that promote a healthier, more resilient healthcare workforce.
