We are now heading towards the final years of Horizon 2020, the EU’s largest innovation and research funding programme, spanning over 7 years (2014 – 2020) with a budget of €77 billion. The past years of Horizon 2020 have been marked with numerous achievements, including 19 Nobel Prizes and pioneering treatments for chronic diseases. Recently released by the European Commission, the final Work Programme for Horizon 2020, covering the budgetary years 2018, 2019 and 2020, represents an investment of around €30 billion.
Health, demographic change and wellbeing will continue to be an integral focus of the 2018-2020 work programme to tackle the four main healthcare challenges facing Europe: rising healthcare costs due to increasing burden of chronic diseases and the ageing population, the influence on health of external environmental factors including climate change, the potential threat of infectious diseases and health inequalities, and access to health and care.
The 2018-2020 Work Programme has devised calls for proposals grouped into the following Call Topics:
- Better Health and care, economic growth and sustainable health systems
- This call aims at reconciling better health and healthy ageing with the need to develop sustainable health and care systems and growth opportunities for the health and care related industries. The call revolves around five key priority areas: personalised medicine, innovative health and care industry, infectious diseases and improving global health, integration of care, decoding the role of the environment, including climate change, for health and well being.
- Digital transformation in Health and Care
- This call aims at supporting the management of health and well being while empowering the participation of citizens and facilitating the transformation of health and care services to more digitised, person-centred and community-based care models, thereby enabling better access to healthcare and the sustainability of health and care systems.
- Trusted digital solutions and Cybersecurity in Health and Care
- This call aims at multidisciplinary technologies and solutions in health and care with a focus on cybersecurity to assure data privacy, security and protection of health and care infrastructures

I have been active in EHMA since the first years of the '90s and I have seen its evolution from a small association of members interested in sharing knowledge on health management practices to the current status of reference and advisory key player for EU, health systems and organisations, stakeholders associations, industry and universities. EHMA is now a unique knowledge hub, policy advisor, community of practice and network of best in class organisations involved in health policy and management. Health management has a crucial function in shaping public health and health system challenges. The Medical University of Varna, Bulgaria had success in collaborating with EHMA on EU-funded projects that has resourced us to create new health management competencies for the future workforce. It is an art contributing to the beauty of our lives and an interactive communication process at all levels of institutions and human energy.
