Medication errors remain one of the most significant patient safety challenges in hospitals. As health systems increasingly adopt digital solutions, health managers need practical guidance to plan, implement and sustain this transformation.
The ‘How-To Managers’ Guide on the digitalisation of medication management pathways in European hospitals’ has been developed to support hospital leaders throughout this process. Rather than focusing on technology alone, the guide provides a practical framework to help organisations assess their readiness, build the case for investment, manage implementation and embed digital solutions into everyday practice.
Designed as a hands-on resource, the guide combines strategic advice with practical tools, including checklists, planning templates, real-world case studies and examples of good practice. It covers the full medication management pathway, helping managers understand how digital technologies can improve patient safety, reduce administrative burden and support more efficient hospital operations.
Developed through the EPACT Alliance in collaboration with 23 organisations representing patients, healthcare professionals and industry, the guide reflects a broad European consensus on the future of digital medication management.

Health management has a crucial function in shaping public health and health system challenges. The Medical University of Varna, Bulgaria had success in collaborating with EHMA on EU-funded projects that has resourced us to create new health management competencies for the future workforce.
