EAHP SIG on Investigation of Medication Errors and Efficiency in Oncology
The EAHP Special Interest Group (SIG) on Investigation of Medication Errors and Efficiency in Oncology is a multidisciplinary network working to improve medication safety and operational efficiency in cancer care across Europe. Operating under the umbrella of the European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP), the SIG brings together hospital pharmacists, healthcare professionals and other experts to address medication errors in one of the most complex and high-risk areas of healthcare.
Medication errors remain a significant patient safety challenge despite advances in digital technologies and clinical decision support systems. By promoting collaboration, research and evidence-based practice, the SIG seeks to better understand the causes of medication errors in oncology and identify solutions that improve both patient outcomes and the working environment for healthcare professionals.
The work of the SIG
The SIG investigates the prevalence, causes and consequences of medication errors throughout the oncology medication management pathway. Its work explores factors contributing to medication errors, including workforce shortages, organisational challenges and the impact on healthcare professionals involved in medication incidents, often referred to as second victims.
Building on this evidence, the group develops practical recommendations to improve medication safety, strengthen efficiency within oncology services and support the implementation of safer medication management practices across European hospitals.
EHMA’s role
EHMA contributes the perspective of health management to the Special Interest Group by supporting the development of evidence that informs improvements in oncology medication management. This includes contributing to literature reviews, analysing organisational factors associated with medication errors and collaborating in the development of recommendations to improve patient safety and operational efficiency.
By bringing expertise in health system management and organisational improvement, EHMA helps ensure that recommendations consider not only clinical practice but also leadership, workforce, governance and the wider organisational context in which medication safety is delivered.

Health management has a crucial function in shaping public health and health system challenges. The Medical University of Varna, Bulgaria had success in collaborating with EHMA on EU-funded projects that has resourced us to create new health management competencies for the future workforce.
