EU4Health Civil Society Alliance
The EU4Health Civil Society Alliance is a coalition of European health non-governmental organisations working to strengthen the European Health Union and ensure that civil society remains an integral partner in European health policymaking. Bringing together organisations representing patients, healthcare professionals, public health, disease-specific communities and health management, the Alliance promotes coordinated advocacy on the European Union’s most pressing health priorities.
Established in 2017, the Alliance was created to safeguard a strong European role in health policy and continues to advocate for ambitious EU action that improves health, reduces inequalities and supports resilient health systems.
The work of the Alliance
The Alliance provides a collaborative platform through which health civil society organisations develop common policy positions, coordinate advocacy and engage with the European Commission, the European Parliament and other European institutions.
Its work focuses on promoting a strong European Health Union, ensuring meaningful civil society participation in EU health policymaking, advocating for sustainable investment in public health and supporting coordinated European action on health priorities. In recent years, the Alliance has placed particular emphasis on securing sustainable operating funding for European health civil society organisations, recognising that an independent and representative civil society is essential for effective, inclusive and evidence-informed health policymaking.
EHMA’s role
EHMA contributes the perspective of health management to the Alliance, ensuring that the experience of healthcare organisations and health managers informs European health policy discussions. Through collaborative advocacy, EHMA contributes to joint position papers, policy statements and stakeholder dialogue while promoting health system resilience, effective governance and sustainable investment in health.
By working alongside organisations representing patients, professionals and public health, EHMA helps strengthen a coordinated civil society voice on issues affecting Europe’s health systems.
What our Members say
I have been active in EHMA since the first years of the '90s and I have seen its evolution from a small association of members interested in sharing knowledge on health management practices to the current status of reference and advisory key player for EU, health systems and organisations, stakeholders associations, industry and universities. EHMA is now a unique knowledge hub, policy advisor, community of practice and network of best in class organisations involved in health policy and management. A place where health managers can build their competences, policy-makers and stakeholder associations envision how to implement and sustain change through health management, industry leaders understand how to engage more effectively with health organisations and systems. Health management has a crucial function in shaping public health and health system challenges. The Medical University of Varna, Bulgaria had success in collaborating with EHMA on EU-funded projects that has resourced us to create new health management competencies for the future workforce. In addition to all classical definitions, health management is a science dealing with individuals, groups, and society at large. It is an art contributing to the beauty of our lives and an interactive communication process at all levels of institutions and human energy. I have also had the pleasure to chair the South Eastern European Special Interest Group which gives members a space to discuss and tools to address how health systems are managed in our regions.
